Morrison, Bare and Cass
erected the paper and pulp mill in Tyrone in 1878. The
West Virginia Pulp and Paper Co. consolidated with it
in 1899. The major part of the mill ceased operations
in 1970. Since 1970, the main product was the American
Eagle line of paper, made of 50 percent recycled paper.
The high-quality paper, noted for its excellent
printability, runability, and reliability, was used by
the National Geographic Society for its magazine
covers.
Historic structures surviving
from the 19th century are: two powerhouses used to
generate electricity and steam for the mill, the
carpenter’s shop and blacksmith’s shop, and
a long, two-story building along Pennsylvania
Ave.
WestVaco ceased operations and
closed in October 2001. In July 2003, Team Ten LLC
announced the purchase agreement with the Mead WestVaco
Company and resumed operations in November 2003 as the
American Eagle Paper Mill.
