St.
Matthew’s Roman Catholic Church can be seen by
looking up 11th St. toward Cameron Ave. Its tall,
redstone bell tower and huge, circular stained-glass
window can be seen from many parts of Tyrone and from
the Route 220 Bypass (Interstate 99). The church has
fifty-seven stained-glass windows of different
sizes.
The school was built in 1885, the
convent shortly thereafter, and the church in
1896.
The church completed Phase I of its
long-range restoration project in 2003, in time for its
year-long 150th Anniversary Celebration. A time capsule was
removed and its contents displayed. On November 15, 2003,
various current items were stored in the time capsule.
