The American Legion Home
formerly was the mansion of J. K. Johnston,
superintendent of the Tyrone Division of the
Pennsylvania Railroad in the 1920s. A greenhouse, along
with large flower and vegetable gardens, was located on
the site of the present parking area. Behind the Legion
Home are high cliffs called “the bluffs.”
At the base of the cliffs was the entrance to a large
cave, and on top of the bluff was a log
house. Over the years, many people have tried to climb
the bluffs.
During the flood of 1936, Dry
Run, which runs along the base of the bluffs, overflowed.
The entrance to the cave is now six feet below the
ground, and high walls were built after the flood.
