The Junior Mechanics Building
[Fraternity Building] was built on the site of the Hess
Building in 1920. The Wolf Furniture Company bought the
building in 1933. Twice, in 1946 and again in 1969, the
structures were destroyed by fire and then rebuilt. The
third floor of the building had a beautiful ballroom.
Here, many of Tyrone’s young ladies took dancing
lessons — some taught by Tom Waring. Here too,
the Waring-McClintock-Snap Orchestra got its start,
playing for many of the dances held in the
ballroom.
Purchased and renovated in
1991, it was renamed The Hess Building in memory of Dion
Hess, a former owner. I-99 Antiques, a unique
multi-dealer gallery featuring quality antiques and
collectibles, occupies the retail space of the
building.
