This structure was built
in 1910 for Augustus C. DeFerie, who operated a
confectionery and fruit business here until 1914.
Attorney Lawrence J. DeFerie had an offices on the
premises; apartments were on the second and third floors.
The List Restaurant was a tenant in the building until
about 1940.
During the years of World War
I I, the building housed the Tyrone-Waring Canteen,
which had an attractive food bar that provided free
refreshments and coffee for any weary serviceman
traveling by rail or bus. It was an ideal site in the
first block from the Pennsylvania Railroad Station and
because all the buses stopped directly in front of the door.
The canteen opened in April 1943 and closed in July 1946,
having served more than 78,000 servicemen. Registrations
listed servicemen from over a hundred Pennsylvania towns,
thirty-nine states, and the District of
Columbia.
After the closing of the canteen,
the Fay Little Bar and Grill occupied the first floor.
Today, the building is empty.
Keen eyes may be able to read the
small plaque near the top of the building. It reads
“ACD 1910.”
